STUDENTS from Heathcote and Holy Rosary Primary Schools competed in a House Athletics Carnival at Barrack Reserve recently.

Divided into house groups, rather than competing as schools, students participated in athletics events including sprints, high jump, shot put, long jump and relays.

The event was well attended by family members who assisted with events, moving equipment and preparing the sausage sizzle.

“Students earned points for team spirit, sportsmanship and teamwork along with points for athletic achievements,” said HPS principal Carolyn Crowther.

“There was even a hotly contested adult relay race.

“It was great to see so many students dressed up and in team colours.

“Eventual winners were the yellow team.”

Despite grey clouds, the rain held off and students, teachers and families enjoyed the sportsmanship and making new friends.

“I really liked it when we did the long distance run because it was lots of running and I’ve never run that far before,” said HPS grade 2 student Emma.

Principals from both schools agreed it was a fantastic exercise and plan more joint school activities in the future.

“We had a fantastic athletics day together,” said Holy Rosary principal Jen Roberts.

“The weather held off for us, the kids were very enthusiastic and the vibe around the ground was brilliant.

“The students participated really well and worked so well in their colour groups.

“It didn’t matter which school you were from – they all got along tremendously well.

“Our thanks to the organising committee, especially Larissa from Heathcote Primary.

“The day was well organised and supported by family and friends from both schools as well as several local businesses.

“We look forward to the next joint activity later in the year.”

Crowther said she had lots of positive feedback from both students and parents.

“It was wonderful to see students from both schools working together, cheering each other on and enjoying the day together,” she said.

“We’re very grateful for the support from the school communities and broader Heathcote community for volunteering their time to help at the event and donations of food to feed the hungry athletes.

“It was a marvellous way to spend a Monday.”
