Bowls club calls for historic memorabilia
HEATHCOTE Bowling Club will celebrate its one hundred and twentieth anniversary later this year.
The committee is seeking any old photos or memorabilia for displays during the celebrations.
“We are hoping people may have old photos or memorabilia of the club at home and they would be willing to lend it to us for the celebration later this year,” said club secretary Duncan McGann.
“The club is yet to finalise plans for the celebrations later in the year but will be looking forward to celebrating with the Heathcote community.”
The club was established on 30 November 1904 and by the end of that year there were 32 members.
“By 1926, the club was struggling and was defunct in 1928,” said Mr McGann.
“The McIvor Shire engineer at that time, J. R. Tufts successfully revived the club, and it has continued to serve the lawn bowlers of Heathcote to this day.
“Not only is the club a successful sporting concern, but it is also an important social outlet for many of the town’s residents.
“The Heathcote Bowling Club is immensely proud of the fact that many of the town’s service organisations use the club rooms for training and functions.
“The club is very successful nowadays, with over 60 active members, and a hugely popular summer barefoot bowls competition.”
