HEATHCOTE Fire Brigade is reminding residents to check their smoke alarms to ensure they are in working order.

Heating is a major cause of fires during the winter months and working smoke alarms can save lives.

“With the cooler weather now approaching, many of us will begin using our heating more, including our wood heaters,” said community safety officer Evan Pritchard.

“Now is a good time to make sure your smoke alarms are in good working order.

“Most alarms can be tested by simply pushing the small button on the face of the alarm with the end of a broom handle or similar.

“Hold the button in until the alarm beeps.

“If no sound is heard, the battery may need to be replaced.

“CFA recommends using 10-year lithium batteries, available at most hardware stores.”

Eligible residents are also able to have smoke alarms installed free of charge by the CFA.

“As part of the CFA’s winter smoke alarm campaign, eligible Heathcote residents may be able to access new 10-year battery smoke alarms installed free of charge,” said Pritchard.

The CFA is also offering safety tips for the winter months.

Residents should make sure heaters are being used in a safe manner so homes, and families, are not at risk.

Heaters should be turned off before bed and clothes kept at least one metre away from all heating sources including heaters and fireplaces.

Children always need to be supervised around heaters and open fires.
