INTERNATIONAL Nurses Day 2026 will be celebrated on Tuesday 12 May.

Observed annually on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the day honours the role nurses play in worldwide healthcare, highlighting their dedication, professionalism and impact on patient care.

Set by the International Council of Nurses, this year’s theme is Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.

The theme aims to emphasise the importance of empowering nurses with safe and fair work environments, full professional practice, leadership opportunities, and influence in healthcare decision-making.

It reflects the urgent need to support nurses amid global challenges such as workforce shortages, rising healthcare demands, and the effects of conflict and climate change.

Nursing staff at Heathcote Health will mark the day with a get-together at the hospital.

“It will be a busy day, but we always make time to get everyone from all sections together,” acute nurse unit manager Jade Runnalls said.

“We have nursing staff in acute care, aged care, district nursing, Support at Home, and a community team.

“Heathcote Health is a great place to work.

“At least 50 per cent of our nurses travel from outer areas which is a testament to the conditions, staff and atmosphere here.”

Runnalls has worked at Heathcote Health since 2004, starting her career as a graduate nurse.

“I love it here and I love my job,” she said.

“It is very rewarding and means a lot to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families.

“One very special part of my duties is palliative care, ensuring patients have the very best care and comfort at the end of their lives.

“It is an honour to be with them.”
