LETTERS have been sent out to residents inviting them to comment on the proposed name for the Heathcote Community Hub.
The City of Greater Bendigo is undertaking a naming process and proposing to name the hub the Bibi Bibi Community Hub with Geographical Names Victoria.
Bibi Bibi means all here in Taungurung Language.
The Community Hub precinct, comprising the former Court House, Shire Offices and Mechanics Institute, is undergoing a multi-million-dollar redevelopment by the City.
City of Greater Bendigo community partnerships acting manager Bridget Maplestone said the City is a Naming Authority for places it owns or manages.
“The naming of existing and new City-owned facilities in Traditional Owner language is in line with the City’s Reconciliation Plan Barpangu 2021-2025 and our strong commitment to supporting Aboriginal place naming and the use of Traditional Owner language in public spaces across the municipality,” Ms Maplestone said.
“Naming of all roads, features and localities in Victoria need to follow the statutory requirements of the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria.
“Following consultation with the Taungurung Land and Waters Council the City is now undertaking a naming process for the site.
“Registering place names with Geographic Names Victoria is essential to identify locations for managing emergencies and delivering goods and services in Victoria.”
Feedback can be provided on the proposed name via the City’s Let’s Talk Greater Bendigo community engagement website at letstalkgreaterbendigo.com.au/registration-city-place-names.
If residents do not respond to the community consultation opportunity it will be taken as implied consent to the naming proposal.
Submissions must be received by 3pm, Monday 22 September. Submissions or objections should include the person’s or group’s interest in the naming proposal and the reason they believe the name is appropriate or inappropriate, suitable or unsuitable.
After the closing date, submissions will be considered and a report presented to council with all the information.
