ELEVEN months after historic copies of the McIvor Times dating back to the 1850s came back home to Heathcote, they have been sorted and are now displayed on new shelving.

The newspapers were previously stored in the Times News Group office in Bendigo.

Warick Brown, managing director of the Times News Group, gifted the copies to the Heathcote Historical Society after purchasing the masthead several years ago.

“We inherited a copy of every edition dating back to and including Vol 1. No 1. and I knew immediately they aren’t really ours,” he said

“The history belonged to the Heathcote and surrounds community.”

Research Officer/Museum Curator of the Heathcote Historic Society, Elizabeth Murfitt, and McIvor Historical Society member Ralph Watkins collected the newspapers from Bendigo.

“We were thrilled to receive them and have them back home where they belong,” said Ms Murfitt.

“And now we have sorted through them all and have them displayed on new shelving we bought with donations.

“They are in great condition for their age and make a great display of Heathcote history.”

The Heathcote McIvor Historical Society Museum at 19 Herriot Street, Heathcote, is open each Wednesday from 10am to 1pm.
