HEATHCOTE Pool is preparing to open ahead of schedule despite last week’s flash flooding which saw McIvor Creek rise to a level that completely engulfed the centre.

A spokesperson for pool operators Belgravia Leisure have confirmed the pool will re-open for the remainder of the summer season and is on track to welcome swimmers as early as next week.

Silt and debris impacted both pools and the plant room.

Belgravia Leisure area manager Cam Nation said it had been all hands on deck, working with a dedicated team from the City of Greater Bendigo and specialist external contractors.

“Once the water level receded on Monday afternoon we had teams from Bendigo, Melbourne and council to assess the damage to the facility and start engaging contractors to work on pool remediation,” he said.

“Within 48 hours we had commenced draining the pool, with commercial trucks onsite by Thursday to remove the significant layer of silt throughout the centre.

“After cleaning and repairing the pool shell we are now in the process of refilling both pools and repairing plant room equipment.

Both pools were impacted by the deluge, with the kid’s pool also requiring a full cleanout.

“Then we will work on chemically treating the water to ensure it meets the required water quality standards.”

Events including water aerobics, pre-school hour and live music by the pool had only just commenced before the flooding.

“We know this is such an important community facility and even if we re-open and it only means another six or seven weeks of swimming, it is vital community activation that we know the community will appreciate,” said Mr Nation.

“Belgravia Leisure has a long and proud history of managing outdoor facilities throughout the country.

“We know these pools are the lifeblood of local communities, and we are doing everything we can to see Heathcote back open for the remainder of the summer season.”
