HEATHCOTE Soup Kitchen opened its doors last week, welcoming anyone in the community in need of a nourishing meal or some social interaction.
The kitchen is located at 61 Ebden Street, next to Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church.
Father Peter Ferwerda said the opening day went very well.
“I was very pleased with the attendance,” said Fr Ferwerda.
“A friendly atmosphere filled the room, and we had some terrific feedback.

“I met people I hadn’t met before.
“They came from different backgrounds and places and all enjoyed mixing together and sharing stories.”
Parishioner and volunteer Mario Azzapardi initially approached Fr Ferwerda with the idea for the soup kitchen.
“I thought it was a great idea and, together with other volunteers got on board,” said Fr Ferwerda.
“The initiative offers a meal and a social opportunity for the Heathcote community.

“I hope people will keep coming, enjoy the delicious soups cooked and served by our volunteers, catch up with old friends and make some new ones.”
Head cook Sharon Monaco acknowledged Mark from Segafredo’s Bakery who donated loaves
of bread.
“We salute his generosity and kindness in supporting this very important charity,” she said.
“We opened with pumpkin soup and will have different varieties over the coming weeks.”

First through the doors were good friends Sandra Kirby and Bev Sharpe. “What a wonderful idea,”
said Kirby.
“Who doesn’t need a bowl of delicious soup on a winter’s day?”
Sharpe said the community spirit in the room was wonderful.
“This is great for everyone and the volunteers are fantastic,” she said.
Heathcote Soup Kitchen will open every Thursday during the winter months from 12pm to 2pm.
