EIGHT-year-old performing artist Scarlett Homes will make her debut on stage in a production of Matilda the Musical Jr in Seymour next month.

The Holy Rosary student is a member of the Seymour Performers Workshop – Youth Theatre Group.

“My mum saw a post on Facebook calling for children to audition for a performance of Matilda,” said Scarlett.

“I asked her if I could do it because I’ve seen both the movies and really enjoyed them.

“I was a bit nervous when I went to the audition, but I was one of only two people who made it to the second round.

“The other was my new friend Parker who I met when we attended the audition, and we are both in the ensemble cast.

“I like being in the ensemble cast because we get to be on stage for the whole performance, singing and dancing.

“I love learning all the dance moves and songs.

“We practice every Sunday and over the school holidays we will also attend for three days in a row with our last practice before the performances, without scripts.”

Scarlett also attends drama classes at Props Theatre in Bendigo.

Mother Tess Holmes is full of admiration for the volunteers at Seymour Performers Workshop who travel from Melbourne to conduct workshops and rehearse.

“Mads and Kim are fantastic with the children,” she said.

“They put so much in and it’s completely voluntary.”

Scarlett would like to be an actor and a zookeeper when she is an adult.

The first performance of Matilda the Musical Jr will be a matinee at Seymour College Arts Centre on Sunday 10 May, followed by an evening show.

There will matinee and evening shows on Saturday 16 May with the final performance on Sunday 17 May already sold out.
