A GROUP of volunteers at Heathcote District Uniting Church say there is such a thing as a free lunch.

Every two months they invite community members to join them for a delicious meal in the church hall.

“We used to have regular events before COVID restrictions,” said one of the organisers, Sue Hayes.

“Then after the restrictions eased, we wanted to help encourage people to get out again.

“It had become too easy to stay home. People were isolated and lonely. “Even now there are still many people who are afraid to go out and don’t know if it’s safe.”

Ms Hayes, along with Laraine Leask, Bron Jones and June Gleeson resumed the community event 18 months ago.

“Sometimes we have soup with bread rolls, tea and coffee and lots of delicious cakes and slices,” said Ms Hayes.

“At other times we have a morning tea.

“It is a great way to get people out and about again. We have lots of regulars and others who come occasionally.

“The luncheons are held from 12noon to 2pm. Some stay for the whole event while others might just call in for 15 minutes.

“It is open to all ages and is non-denominational. You can come on your own or bring a friend.”

Ms Hayes said that many of the attendees have become good friends.

“At our Christmas lunch, some exchanged small gifts. It was lovely,” she said.

The next lunch will be held on Friday 21 June at midday. Everyone is welcome.
