From Compton to Queensland

Matthew Tully and Liam Fielding are set for the adventure of a lifetime when they line up with around 300 participants for the 2024 Mystery Box Rally.

On Saturday, August 16, in Airlie Beach, Queensland, the Mount Gambier duo will join teams from all over the country in Mystery Box Rally, tackling a mystery five-day driving route where each night’s stopover will only be unveiled to them at the start of each day, that’s the mystery.

It had been a long time goal for Matthew to participate in a charity rally, so his wife Summa decided to put his name in the pool for the mystery box challenge.

“It was one of those do it now or never things, and who better to do it with then his long time school friend Liam,” Summa said.

The pairing has strong motivation to be involved in this cancer fundraiser.

“We are doing it for those fighting the fight and those that have lost the battle,” Matthew said. “We have had many family members battle cancer so it is fitting to help raise funds for the Cancer Council.

“We will be travelling in a 1992 Eb Ford Falcon, which we are currently preparing for the rally and we are looking forward to seeing the Queensland outback.”

Cars must be older than 25 years, roadworthy with no 4WD or AWD and teams need to raise a minimum of $4000 to participate with the overall fundraising target set at $1million.

The finish line is back in Airlie Beach on August 21.

No mechanical experience is needed, just willingness for good times and fundraising.

“We have had a great response from local business from donating goods and services for raffles, and sponsorship, which is helping our fundraising efforts,” Matthew said.

The Straight Outta Compton team’s next fundraising event is a Mothers Day Raffle.

Prizes include accommodation and hospitality vouchers, Jimmy Rees tickets, garden, book and beauty vouchers with Majella Wines, Lakes Comfort Inn, Hills Road Farm, Slice of Metro, Vanity, Collins Books, Gardenarium, Shabby Chic Salon, Lauren Fox Massage Therapy, Dyzner and Cleaneasy all contributing to the raffle prizes.

The rally is part of Box Rallies, which includes Shitbox Rally and Cancer Cruise; devised in 2009 by James Freeman after both his parents died of cancer within 12 months of each other.

Box Rallies is now the leading individual fundraiser for Cancer Council nationally generating over $41 million to Cancer research plus media awareness for Cancer Council.

This helps the lives of millions of Australians who are facing their unknown journeys.

“Mystery Box Rally is not a race, but a reward for fundraising efforts,” James said. “All our rallies are so much fun, but Mystery Box keeps delivering year after year with more and more people returning to participate. In 2024, teams will start and finish in Airlie Beach.

“After a warm and amazing Mystery Box Rally in 2023 we are chasing the warmth again with the announcement that the 2024 start and finish line is Airlie Beach, Queensland.

“The position of Airlie Beach gives us a great area to travel for the rally with plenty of amazing bush tracks to explore and country/outback hospitality.

“We know that a lot of participants will enjoy everything Airlie Beach has to offer, plus the days prior and post rally with some winter warmth. As with all Mystery Box Rally’s the route is top secret, but I am confident that the teams will have an exceptional time over the five-day adventure.”
