Free skin cancer screenings on offer later this month

THE Lions Clubs of Blue Lake City Lioness, Gambier City and Mount Gambier are sponsoring a free skin cancer screening at the Mount Gambier Marketplace from March 27-29 from 9am to 3.30pm each day.

Appointments are essential and bookings open on March 9 at 8am so please call 8723 2737 for PM bookings or 8725 1019 for AM bookings.

This service is not for people who have had a skin check in the past 12 months so if you have had a recent check and are still concerned about a spot, please visit your doctor.

A person’s risk of skin cancer can increase with the following factors:

A family member who has had a malignant melanoma

Outdoor occupations – farmers, fishers, tradies, etc.

Five or more moles [not freckles] on your forearms.

Previously had moles removed that were not cancerous

Previously had skin cancer

A mole or freckle that is changing in shape, size or colour.

Fair skin that always burns rather than tans.

Had blistering sunburn as a child, enough to stay out of school

Any inflamed skin sores that do not heal.

The message is simple – a fifteen-minute screening may SAVE YOUR LIFE.

Screeners are health professionals who provide community services through the Lions Medical Research Foundation.

The project has screened almost 30,000 people with a referral rate for Medical Assessment of 21.8 per cent with almost 6500 life-threatening lesions identified and referred for medical assessment.

Attendees are respectfully requested not to wear makeup, skin tanner, nail polish, hair products, or deodorant to your appointment. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment to complete the paperwork.

The screening will take 10 minutes.
