Nelson windfarm gets tick of approval
GLENELG Shire is set to become a leader in renewable energy with the Victorian Government approving the Kentbruck Green Power Hub near Nelson.
This landmark project will deliver cleaner, cheaper energy for Victoria while driving investment, creating jobs, and supporting growth across our region—from Nelson to Portland and surrounding communities.
The 600-megawatt wind farm will feature up to 105 turbines, generating approximately 2,000 gigawatt hours of renewable energy annually—enough to power around 380,000 homes.
This project represents a significant investment in Glenelg Shire’s future, creating 350 jobs during construction and supporting 14 ongoing roles once operational.
The project will also contribute to regional energy security, which is important for major investors and employers such as the Portland Aluminium Smelter, reinforcing Glenelg Shire as a hub for industry and innovation.
Beyond jobs and investment, the Kentbruck Green Power Hub positions Glenelg Shire as a destination for sustainable growth.
By embracing renewable energy, we are opening doors for new opportunities and supporting long-term economic resilience while supporting rigorous environmental safeguards being in place.
Glenelg Shire Mayor Karen Stephens said this was a transformative moment for Glenelg Shire.
“The Kentbruck Green Power Hub will deliver clean energy for Victoria while creating jobs, attracting investment, and strengthening our local economy,” she said. “From Nelson to Portland and beyond, this project will help our communities thrive.”
CEO Helen Havercroft said the approval of this project reflected years of planning and collaboration and they looked forward to continuing that collaboration as ongoing community benefits were determined.
“Glenelg Shire is committed to supporting sustainable projects that bring long-term benefits for our residents and businesses,” Ms Havercroft said. “This is a positive step toward a cleaner, more resilient future for our region.”
