A NEW psychology practice has opened in Bakery Hill with a focus on women’s mental health.

Ballarat Women’s Psychology owner Kimberley Tuohey said the clinic’s aim was to cater to adult and adolescent women in a holistic and culturally sensitive way.

“Our one-on-one therapy sessions provide a safe and confidential space for women to explore their emotions, thoughts and behaviours, as well as making sense of their experiences,” she said. “Our psychologists use evidence-based approaches tailored to the specific concerns of each female client.

“We offer therapeutic group programs designed exclusively for women, and we have immediate entry to groups always.

“These groups provide a supportive environment to connect with others facing similar challenges.

“Currently we are running women’s groups for mood disorders, depression/anxiety, perinatal groups, and health focused groups for women with conditions such as endometriosis.”

Ms Tuohey said individual therapy had a gap fee, but group therapy was a low-cost way for those with a Mental Health Plan to still get some support.

“They’re a good stop gap for people who can’t afford to see a psychologist… or who can’t get an appointment for a few weeks.”

There are two practicing psychologists working in the clinic, two more are coming on board in the next six months, and they expect to employ another two within the next year.

Ms Tuohey said these professionals all have a long-time interest in women’s health.

“Throughout their time at university and beyond into clinical practice they have all been involved in research in the field,” she said.

The practice has been open for about a month, and is fully booked a couple of weeks ahead, but expanded hours are planned from June.

“We’ve had strong referrals from local GPs and we’re doing some work with organisations including Orange Door and Berry Street to support their clients,” Ms Tuohey said.

Ballarat Women’s Psychology is based at 36B Victoria Street,

Bakery Hill.
