There is a significant female presence at the Geelong Racing Club from board level through to the management team and as part of the casual raceday workforce.

The GRC presently has three female board members, four on the management team and a core 15 of the casual workforce team.

On the track, female jockey numbers are thriving not to mention the success they are also having by producing outstanding rides for great results.

In what has traditionally and historically seen a majority involvement from men, there is no doubt that women are now having a significant impact at both local and industry levels.

The Geelong Racing Club is a prime example of this with the likes of Sophie Favre, Sarah Start, Alex Nairn and Vanessa Curlewis having a major say in the day-to-day operations of the club along with a significant say in shaping the future of the club.

“The best part about working at the GRC is the closeness of our team,” Sophie said.

“We all have a very diverse skill set and all of us are always willing to learn from each other and go above and beyond.

“Within this industry, our day-to-day roles can vary, making each day different to the next.

“It makes the motivation to come to work very easy!

We have a lot of fun, and we are lucky that the GRC embraces us as individual, strong women.”

The quartet of women oversee major elements and deliver significant results across OHS, workplace practices, membership, sales, sponsorship, partnership services, marketing and communications.

The balance that is being achieved through their work commitment, expertise and very much caring natures is providing a wonderful balance to the overall organization.

As the newest member of the team, Sarah, who is driving commercial strategies and outcomes for the club, said the workplace was one to easily become a welcomed part of.

“It’s been a great environment to step into and alongside this team of amazing women we have some great things to work towards for the future benefit of the GRC, sponsors, members, general public and industry stakeholders,” she said.

The team is producing great results for the club including a record Geelong Cup result, a successful summer of racing with December and January results far exceeding expectations, and some fantastic racing and non-racing events booked for the first quarter of 2023.

“The GRC is a great place to work,” Vanessa said.

“As a horse lover, it was a no-brainer for me to join the GRC team and to work with such a fun and supportive group of people is a bonus.

“There is a real spirit of collaboration within our small team as we strive to support the local horse racing industry and ultimately the equine athlete at its core.”

The ladies remain extremely focused in the ever changing and challenging racing environment.
Good Friday Racing looms in April for the team at GRC and these ladies will again be at the forefront of driving strategy and activations to bring another successful day to the community of Geelong and surrounds.
