Finding the right fit at West Carr and Harvey

Simone McNamara and Abbey O'Keefe have found career success at West Carr and Harvey.

Abbey O’Keefe is happy to have found a career and a workplace where she can be herself.

“When starting out as a young graduate accountant I was nervous that joining such a male dominated industry would mean that I would need to ‘talk footy’ or drink beer at lunch to fit in,’ she said.

However, when Abbey came to work with West Carr and Harvey, she was immediately impressed with the kindness and professionalism of the firm.

“I felt like I had found my people, and I knew this was somewhere I could establish and progress my career.”

Abbey is now a senior accountant with West Carr and Harvey, offering tax advice to clients and mentoring junior staff as they follow in her footsteps.

“The directors trust me to assist our clients and staff. I no longer feel I have to prove my worth and that is incredibly empowering.”

Abbey believes the key to happiness in her career has been the human element of her role.

“There’s no doubt that accounting is largely a numbers game and highly analytical, so it’s great to have direct contact with clients, building relationships and assisting them with their individual needs.

I also really enjoy working as a mentor with junior staff and providing the support and encouragement that I know is so important when starting out in your career.”

Simone was surprised that a career in the accounting industry would be where she’d end up the most content.

“When I left school, I started a Bachelor of Education with the intention of becoming an English teacher. It took me less than a year to realise it wasn’t for me,” she said.

Simone is now the accounts manager for West Carr and Harvey and one of the most relied upon and respected individuals in the firm.

“Handling the accounts for the firm keeps me busy but it is a job that is varied, interesting and I really enjoy. I get to interact regularly with my colleagues, clients and suppliers and I am still putting my English skills to use every day.”

Simone has been with West Carr and Harvey for 10 years and believes the key to happiness in her career is feeling valued and fulfilled.

“I am granted the autonomy to make decisions and I know that what I do is integral to the operation of the firm. Being surrounded by people who are respectful, helpful and grateful in the workplace goes a long way to secure career happiness.”
