THIS week we chat with photographer Ky Hansen, who said she has a deep love for black and white photography but is equally drawn to bright, bold colours.

What motivated you to become a photographer?

When I was in grade 5, one of our end-of year-activities was photography. Our teacher introduced us to a black and white film camera, and a friend and I shot a roll of film together.

The teacher had it processed and then showed us how to print and develop the images using an enlarger.

It was pure magic to me, creating an image in this way.

That sense of wonder has stayed with me ever since.

How would you describe your style and how did you develop it?

My style is eclectic, reflecting my diverse inspirations.

I have a deep love for black and white photography, rooted in those early days of film and printing my own work.

But I’m equally drawn to bright, bold colours.

What unifies my work is my passion for capturing people, creating images that tell a story or express a feeling, or are simply pleasing to look at.

Developing this style has been a journey of constant experimentation. I shoot constantly, seeking inspiration in others’ work and trying new techniques to discover what resonates with me.

Which other photographers inspire you and why?

Over the past decade, my biggest influence has been Gina Milicia. Sadly no longer with us, Gina was renowned in Australia’s entertainment industry for her celebrity portraits.

Her unique gift was her ability to break down complex photography concepts – both technical and creative – into their simplest forms, making them accessible and inspiring.

In terms of other photographers, Alan Schaller’s black and white street photography captivates me.

His ability to tell stories through aesthetically stunning images is truly remarkable.

I’m also deeply inspired by Sue Bryce’s elegant portraiture.

Her talent for capturing her subjects’ personalities in such refined, beautiful images is something I strive to emulate in my own work.

What are some highlights you have from your career so far?

One of my recent highlights has been working on the Lush electronic music series by Collective Electronica.

This has allowed me to create images with stunning lighting effects, really capturing the essence of electronic music culture.

Shooting Groovin’ the Moo has been another incredible experience. I’ve had the privilege of photographing some amazing bands and artists over the years.

A different but equally rewarding project was photographing 45 wineries in the Heathcote region for a web design project.

The beauty of Heathcote is breathtaking, and I met such a diverse range of people.

How can people check out your work online?

My website kyhanson.com.au is the best place to see my full portfolio and get a sense of my style across different projects. My Instagram is kyhansonphotography and Facebook kyhansonphotography. Feel free to reach out through any of these platforms.

What would you say to young regional aspiring photographers who are thinking of making a go of the creative life?

Prioritise “time on tools.” Learn the necessary skills, practise them relentlessly, create your work, and explore what interests you.

Be discerning with online resources. Don’t fall into the trap of endless watching without doing.

Find mentors. Their advice, guidance, and feedback can accelerate your growth tremendously.

Above all, stay committed to your craft and keep pushing yourself.

The creative life can be challenging, but it’s incredibly rewarding when you’re doing what you love.
