Residential Services Managers, Mary Foxall, has been working in the aged care industry for 15 years.

With beautiful garden spaces and outdoor areas, residents at Star of The Sea Aged Care Residence are well looked after.

The facility is one of three aged care homes in Torquay and has recently opened a café run by National Disability Insurance Scheme participants.

Residential services manager Mary Foxall has been working in the aged care sector for 15 years, starting out as a carer before studying her Bachelor of Nursing degree and has been with Star of the Sea Aged Care for the past 10 months.

“Over the years I realised that there was a lot of opportunities and I wanted to elevate the homes that I was working in,” she said.

“I could see the gaps that were in the business and in the care that was being delivered and I really wanted to improve those services that other homes were offering.”

In her present role as residential services manager, Mary oversees the wellbeing and care of the 96 residents.

As well as being a nurse, she is also responsible for the business side of Star of the Sea.

She’s also in charge of staff wellbeing, ensuring that they feel supported and are working in an environment where they’re appreciated and cared for.

Mary said she was proud of the place she works and loved being there.

“It’s a real privilege to be able to care for the people that are in my community, and the vulnerable people in the Torquay community, I’m very lucky to be able to be part of the care that we’re giving.”

Mary works full time and is also a mum of two.

For her, International Women’s Day highlights how far women have come and shows that they can still have a fulfilling carer.

“It’s really important to show there’s so many different opportunities for women out there, and this has been a great one for me.”

Mary said aged care was a fairly female-dominated industry with most people coming from a nursing background and in the future, she would like to see more men coming into the profession.
