Stylist’s secret for success: authenticity, passion and hard work

Renovating and opening a two-storey heritage-listed emporium packed with colourful wares and one-off pieces from across the globe is Julia Green's most ambitious project to date.

Julia Green is one of Australia’s leading and most published interior stylists, known primarily for her love of colour.

Styling and writing for many of the world’s best titles, Julia prides herself on producing interior work that evokes emotion.

Julia has co-hosted a Channel 10 TV show, presents styling seminars across the country, is a Dulux colour ambassador and recently co-authored a book called Vivid – covering colourful homes worldwide.

However, Julia – alongside her husband Adam – has just embarked upon her most ambitious project to date: renovating and opening a two-storey heritage-listed emporium packed with colourful wares and one-off pieces from across the globe, right here in Ryrie Street, Geelong.

Julia’s creative career has been far from conventional, having spent 17 years in corporate pharmaceutical land before turning her hand to styling.

A chance encounter with a photographer from Vogue (who was collecting a couch he had bought off her from eBay) found her changing careers overnight.

“He inquired ‘who I styled for’, and to be honest, I didn’t even know such jobs existed, but he insisted I was in the wrong job and should be a stylist,” Julia said.

“I was on a job the next day and have not looked back since.”

Despite such a serendipitous beginning, Julia soon discovered many creative gaps within the market, namely with artwork.

Julia now proudly represents artistic talent on her site and in her store and is passionate about promoting their wares in her new space and creating an “experience” for all of those that visit.

With a second-storey New York style warehouse loft as a dedicated art gallery, her store is a luxurious destination unlike any other nearby, attracting customers from far and wide.

The remainder of the store’s footprint downstairs emulates a home, allowing people to view the wares “in situ”.

Julia’s passion for interiors is contagious, and most that meet her fall under her colourful spell.
She believes the notion of “success” is subjective and can be defined in many ways.

However, her secret to running a thriving business is to be authentic, passionate, hardworking and consistent with your brand, and to surround yourself with clever, like-minded people.

Julia prides herself on sharing her creative secrets with others.

Having hosted many “creative career change” workshops over the years, the energetic stylist has managed to infect hundreds of other burgeoning stylists with her enthusiasm and know-how.

As a mother of two boys and one fur baby, Julia finds her time-poor schedule constantly stretched, but insists that family is what counts most.

“Having a flexible lifestyle/career as a freelancer has been key to juggling motherhood alongside a career,” she said.

“A nine-to-five desk job never was for me, and after much hard work, I am in a position to pick and choose who I want to work with and when, and that is a huge privilege I am grateful for.”

Greenhouse Interiors, Showroom and Art Gallery is at 174-176 Ryrie Street.
