Vintage denim and tailored pieces offer a sustainable fashion solution

Jodie Hayes has years of fashion design experience which she lovingly puts into her original and creative denim store, Scout for Vintage.

After becoming slightly obsessed with denim and particularly vintage jeans, Jodie Hayes decided to use her 10 years’ experience in the fashion industry and go out on her own and create a truly original shopping concept with the goal in helping people to learn a more sustainable and creative way of buying jeans.

Scout for Vintage opened its doors in Torquay at the start of October 2020, and has since grown into something of an underground institute for denim and vintage lovers alike.

Jodie is dedicated to bringing only the best quality vintage denim from around the world to her shop in Torquay, while also offering the added service of tailoring.

With six billion new pairs of jeans produced every year, Jodie stepped up to create an original business concept that highlights the opportunity and promise to never need a “new” pair of jeans ever again.

Aside from specialising in selling anything vintage denim – jeans, shirts and jackets – you can also take advantage of her tailoring services for your own jeans, whether that be patching and mending or refits to those old worn-out favourites.

Jodie’s experience spans from starting and owning her own small businesses to working for some of Australia’s largest fashion companies.

However, it all started when she was gifted her first sewing machine and began upcycling vintage T–shirts she found at flea markets and op shops.

This sparked her interest for more detailed knowledge in fashion creation and design, which led her to gaining a degree at RMIT.

She then found herself dipping into different markets, such as touring bands and stage wear, to owning her own swimwear label and then eventually landing a job on the “denim team” at Cotton On.

It was there that she realised her “obsession” for all things denim was somewhat of a passion.

Jodie’s knowledge and expertise for denim construction and its history is expansive and allows her customers the opportunity to enjoy the world-class curation of Levis, Wranglers and Lee (to name a few) in Torquay.

Scout for Vintage quickly became a destination spot for tourists and enthusiasts alike wanting to engage in its creative and unique shopping experience.

Scout for Vintage will be launching its own “in house” denim brand this April, offering original and unique designs, all upcycled from unwanted and discarded items – offering yet another layer to Scout for Vintage’s sustainable denim ethos.

Applying Jodie’s proven and unique skillset for great fits and expert construction, the new brand will promise to be exclusive in style while inclusive in sizing. Head to scoutforvintage.com.au
