Celebrating culture in early learning

Jenny's Early Learning Centre regularly holds cultural celebrations including a recent event for Holi.

JENNY’S Early Learning Centre (ELC) believes celebrating culture is not a one-off event; it’s a daily practice woven into the fabric of learning environments.

Across the Geelong region at its centres in Lara, Waurn Ponds, Armstrong Creek, and the soon-to-open Grovedale site, Jenny’s ELC is proud to create inclusive, respectful spaces where every child’s cultural identity is nurtured and celebrated.

The team’s commitment to cultural inclusion aligns closely with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), particularly Learning Outcome 2: “Children are connected with and contribute to their world.”

Families are actively encouraged to participate in cultural events and to share their traditions.

This outcome emphasises the importance of children developing a sense of belonging and respect for diversity. By embedding cultural competence into daily routines, children are supported in understanding and appreciating the diverse world around them.

At Jenny’s ELC, cultural celebrations are thoughtfully integrated into the curriculum.

The Armstrong Creek centre recently celebrated Holi, the vibrant Indian festival of colours. Children engaged in colourful activities that highlighted the joy and unity the festival represents. Such celebrations provide meaningful opportunities for children to learn about different traditions and values, fostering empathy and respect from an early age.

Educators play a pivotal role in promoting cultural awareness.

They are trained to recognise and value the cultural backgrounds of all children and families. Activities like cultural show-and-tell sessions encourage children to share aspects of their heritage, such as traditional clothing, music, or stories. These experiences not only enrich the learning environment but also affirm each child’s identity and promote a sense of belonging.

The soon-to-open Grovedale centre is designed with cultural inclusivity in mind. Featuring natural play spaces and sensory gardens, the centre will offer programs that reflect the diverse cultures of the community. By incorporating elements from various cultural traditions into the educational activities, Jenny’s ELC aims to create a learning environment where all children feel seen, heard, and valued.

Family involvement is a cornerstone of its approach. Educators actively encourage families to participate in cultural events and share their traditions with centres.

This collaboration strengthens the connection between home and early learning settings, providing children with a consistent and supportive environment to explore their cultural identities.

At Jenny’s ELC, educators understand culture is a fundamental aspect of a child’s identity. By celebrating and integrating diverse cultural practices into daily activities, they not only comply with the EYLF but also enrich the educational experiences of children.

They are committed to fostering an environment where every child feels respected, included, and empowered to embrace their unique cultural heritage.
