Lulubelle does her business for Danawa
AN UNSUNG hero of the Danawa Community Garden has been congratulated for their hard work in producing outstanding vegetables.
Lulubelle the pony was rescued from a breeding farm about five years ago by Jan Juc resident Damian Byrne, and has been contributing her manure to the garden at Spring Creek Reserve for the past two years.
Danawa gardener Steve Richards, who makes the compost at Danawa, was effusive in his praise of Lulubelle’s manure, saying the pony was “getting on in years” and deserved praise for her contribution.
Each pile of compost needs four or five bags of manure, and Mr Richards estimated he had collected about 200 bags of manure from Lulubelle in two years.
“(The compost) is obviously what promotes growth in the garden here, and why we’ve got such good crops of everything.”
He said the manure was not very complicated to make, but good manure made all the difference to the plants.
“It’s just a case of combining nitrogen with carbon; it’s not rocket science.”
Mr Richards said recent heavy rain and the ongoing watering roster meant there would be a good harvest soon.
“We’ve got corn, beans, loads of tomatoes… it’ll be coming out of our ears shortly.”
