Innovation by design at Cabinets by Computer

May 5, 2023 BY

Harbouring an exciting work culture and an innovative approach to cabinet making, Cabinets by Computer is hoping for a third win at the 2023 Geelong Business Excellence Awards.

Geelong-based business Cabinets by Computer works to improve the automation process for cabinet making businesses to improve efficiency, an objective awarded at last year’s Geelong Business Excellence Awards (GBEA).

Cabinets by Computer was named winner of the Innovation, Research & Development Award, sponsored by VIVA Energy.

“Last year’s innovation award was the one that we really wanted to get considering development and innovation is at the heart of what we do on a daily basis,” General Manager Justin Collins said.

“Particularly in an industry that tends to be, in a lot of ways, backwards in adapting to new technologies. So for us, if we couldn’t win Business of the Year, that was the one we really wanted to win.

“We were all super pumped about that.”

Cabinets by Computer supply, install and support software for cabinet makers which covers all aspects of cabinet making, from the design process, quoting and orders, sales and the construction of the products.

The company’s software technology utilises hands-on knowledge with progressive software to create products.

“Accepting the award was really a huge pat on the back for myself and the team, none of which would be possible without their efforts over the past few years,” Mr Collins said.

“We have a superb culture, we encourage a hybrid-work policy situation, but most workers prefer to be in the office as often as possible rather than working at home, which is really indicative of the environment we offer.”

Mr Collins encouraged fellow Geelong businesses to apply for the GBEA because it allows time to reflect on past achievements.

“Applying does make you self-analyse the business and improve on areas that need improvement, but in business it is quite easy to not stop and look back on your achievements over the last 12 months,” Mr Collins said.

“The application process does afford you the chance to do that, and we use it as a chance to remind the team of some of the terrific work that they did over that period.

“It’s quite a good team-building exercise in the lead up to the awards night as well.”
