The return of Werribee Open Range Zoo’s Sunset Safari experience is thrilling and delighting visitors for a fifth year with a new route for the 2023 season.

As a golden glow descends over the Zoo’s savannah during the summer evenings, safari buses take visitors on a mesmerising and immersive after-hours adventure to see some of the world’s most endangered animals.

This year, for the first time, visitors are embarking on a route with a focus on the fascinating behaviours of the hippopotamus and learn from zoo guides about the threatened species’ plight in the wild and how to help.

Werribee Open Range Zoo director Dr Mark Pilgrim said Sunset Safari was a must-do experience for people of all ages.

Sunset Safari emulates the essence of an authentic African safari.

“Sunset Safari emulates the essence of an authentic African safari, and the experience is located right in the heart of Melbourne’s west with no plane ticket required,” Dr Pilgrim said.

“There’s something for everyone, including music and storytelling for children and families, an outdoor adventure for adults, and opportunities for a relaxing and enjoyable evening for grandparents.”

As well as the opportunity to see wildlife on the Savannah, a ticket to Sunset Safari provides access to the Zoo’s walking trails, interactive performances of drums, song and dance to the rhythm and soul of Africa, and a range of food and beverage options including bistro dining, snacks, cocktails and an African village braai.

Sunset Safari helps Zoos Victoria support international partners including the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) in its efforts to save the hippopotamus from extinction. UWEC specialise in wildlife conservation and research, animal rescues and community outreach programs.

This year’s route has a focus on the fascinating behaviours of the hippopotamus.

Sunset Safari is held 5.30-9pm each Saturday throughout January and February. Entry to the special after-hours event costs $59 for adults and $29 for children. Food and drink packages are sold separately and can be pre-booked or purchased on the night.

All tickets must be pre-purchased online via Zoos Victoria’s website.
