Ash Grunwald drops into Waves Music Co

January 11, 2018 BY

So Ash Grunwald rocks up just before New Year’s Eve and he’s got shows booked on the coast, but needs a place to rehearse; a mutual friend connects us.

For those not in the know, Ash is a highly respected international blues/roots musician.

At the studio there is no room for small talk, just guitars.

Ash hotfoots over to an imitation Gibson Flying V that I got from mum and dad when I turned 16.

He comically shreds a little and then raves, “Albert king used to play one of these, I’ve been listening to that concert a lot lately, you know with BB King” (Japan blues carnival in 1989).

Still just as stoked on music as ever.

Space is golden for musicians, so I went surfing and upon my return the next day I was treated to a royal rig rundown.

Modern and adapted to the times; Roland SPD1 drum triggers instead of a stomp box, tambourine, cajon etc. and the sound, still just as hard hitting as “I don’t believe” and “Fish out of water”.

Surf music pioneers of the early 2000s were big on waste reduction and helping to protect our beautiful oceans, so it’s great to see the lineage continue into 2018.

It’s just more colour coordinated.

The sea foam green lid on Ash’s travel cup matches the sea foam finish on his Roland SPD1.
