ADVANCE Care Planning Australia is calling on people to consider their future health care and quality end of life as the country marks National Palliative Care Week.

The week runs from May 11 until May 17 and works to open conversations, raise awareness and advocate for better access to palliative care.

Celebrating 30 years, 2025 takes the theme of what’s your plan, asking Australians to talk about what matters to them during end of life and to make a plan that is empowering and respectful.

Advance care planning helps determine future health care and what would happen if somebody fell seriously ill and was unable to communicate what they wanted.

Advance Care Planning Australia national manager Dr Catherine Joyce said while the topic of planning may be uncomfortable, it has its benefits.

“It gives peace of mind, knowing that you are prepared and your voice will be heard,” she said.

“It eases the burden for loved ones faced with making decisions on your behalf, reducing confusion, stress, and anxiety by giving them confidence that they know what you would have wanted.”

During Palliative Care Week, Australians are being asked to consider their choices by starting with a simple conversation.

“This is a timely reminder to make your future health choices matter,” Dr Joyce said.

“You can talk to your family, so they know what’s important to you.

“It may be the music that you love or the pet that you want by your side if you become critically ill and not able to communicate your preferences.”

People can also talk to their GP or health care provider to better understand the kind of decisions they might need to make.
