Exhibition seeks new horizons

An exciting new exhibition is set to explore the theme of looking beyond the horizon, with seven artists to capture the idea through abstract paintings, ceramics and tapestry.

Set to be exhibited at The Hue and Cry Collective from May 6, Geelong-based curator and painter Chris de Hoog and his wife Amie will showcase their artwork alongside works by local painters Casey Burrill and Nathan Feldman, Melbourne textile artist Hannah Veikkanen, Melbourne painter Jonathon Gemmell and Hobart-based ceramicist Ella Flinn.

 

 

Chris de Hoog said he was incredibly excited to assemble the team of artists and to see how they would address the theme.

“Everyone will draw on their own experiences and inspirations, and by being a broad theme, it’s pretty open for the artists to take it where they want to.

“For me personally, the theme means to look at things beyond what is there in front of you… it’s more about shapes that give the notion of a landscape rather than depicting it from an image.

“I first got into contact with all the artists through Instagram and thought this particular group of emerging and established artists would make a super eclectic bunch.

“I’m not sure how they are going to interpret the theme, but I’m certainly excited to see what they’ve come up with.”

 

He said having his own exhibition for the first time was a lifetime goal and something he would take great privilege in when it opened.

“It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time.

“I’ve exhibited art in a host of shows before but haven’t curated one before… it’s super exciting and I am sure it will be a really good vibe on the night with all the artists being there.

“Ultimately to get the artists all together for this is incredible, and I’m very excited for it.”

 

Beyond the Horizon will open at The Hue and Cry Collective, 64-66 Ryrie Street, Geelong, on May 6 from 7-9pm.

The exhibition will thereafter be accessible from Wednesday to Friday 10am-4.30pm and from 11am-2pm on Saturdays until May 27.
