High stakes at Jim Wall

Some of the biggest names in Surf Lifesaving will be down at Torquay Surf beach this Friday to compete in the Jim Wall Ironman, one of Australia’s oldest races. Amateur athletes will also have the chance to qualify in one of the eight spots on offer for round four of the Summer of Surf Ocean6 at Fairhaven on Sunday. This prestigious event will be run with another 16 races, making for a day of fast paced action, big surf and close finishes. Starting at 1pm, everyone is encouraged to head down and cheer the competitors on.

Pier to Pub

The 38th edition of the famous swim is on Saturday and is the largest open water swim in the world, organised and run by volunteers from Lorne Surf Life Saving Club. The course is 1.2km from the Lorne Pier to the foreshore in front of the LSLS clubhouse. After a nail-biting finish last year, Olympic champion Mack Horton returns for a third attempt to see if he can finally beat seven time winner Sam Sheppard. In the Women’s event, World Ironwoman Champion Harriet Brown – a six-time winner – will be back to defend her title. The first category starts at 12.30pm. Ahoy all ye pirates

The Warralily Summer Spectacular is on until January 31, with a Pirates and Fairies event to be held at Mirambeena Park on Warralily Blvd this Sunday from 4pm-9pm. Pull on your best dress-ups and head down for a huge afternoon of rides, food trucks and live entertainment. Magical fairies have been busy preparing fabulous kids activities; while The Mik Maks will be perform their rocking chidlrens’ songs in their favourite pirate hats. Prepare to go bonkers on the huge inflatable adventure pirate ship, get aerial on the bungee ropes., and enjoy a twilight screening of animated movie The Pirates: Band of Misfits.
