From fabric to food for Patagonia

OUTDOOR apparel retailer Patagonia has set the benchmark for sustainable clothing brands for more than 40 years.

Staying true to its mission of using business to implement solutions to the environmental crisis, the brand has expanded its business from apparel to food with the local launch of Patagonia Provisions.

The new line of delicious, responsibly sourced food includes salmon, breakfast grains, soups and fruit and nut bars for local adventurers to take on the go, or home cookers on the hunt for convenient pantry staples.

Patagonia Provisions believes that food can, and should, be grown, harvested and produced in ways that restore land, water, wildlife and human health.

Senior director for Patagonia Provisions Birgit Cameron said the food industry is one of the biggest industries on earth and a massive contributor to global warming.

“Most of our food is produced using methods that reduce biodiversity, decimate soil and contribute to climate change,” he said.

“Yet food done differently holds a special potential not only to reduce our negative impacts on the planet – but to reverse them entirely. That’s why Patagonia started a food business and we are thrilled to bring this message to Australia.”

To support the launch of Provisions, Patagonia announced free in-store tastings and screenings of Unbroken Ground – a 25-minute film by director Chris Malloy of Farm League, exploring the critical role food has in finding solutions to the environmental crisis.

The documentary-style film was screened in Torquay on Friday, with many people attending to try the new food range and support responsibly sourced food.
