Fairy arrives at

PLATFORM Arts has launched “Fairy”, its latest multi-arts exhibition.

“Fairy” was curated by artists and educators Mel Deerson and Spiros Panigirakis and envisions queerness as a spirit that’s hard to pin down.

The exhibition also asks how queerness can become more visible and what the possibilities and limitations are that come with this.

Platform Arts’ Amber Smith said there is also a sense of decentralising the heteronormative narrative with queer artists working in the space.

“They are also looking at material and intangible ways that queers circulate, contest and collect together as well,” she said.

“It’s as much a social project as it is about the kind of artistic practices it can show as well.”

Ms Smith said there are some interesting practices that form part of the multi-arts exhibition where artists are rethinking how things work.

“Some of the artists are working in quite experimental ways and focusing on expanded concepts as well, which deviates from what you might see in a typical gallery space.”

 

“Fairy” is an interactive and immersive exhibition with installations and projections drawing visitors in.

“A lot of the artists aren’t just working in one space, it’s this multi-form space that they’re working in and working with things in a broader kind of way.”

The exhibition displays a collection of works from well-known artists, including a series of Martin Boyd’s work which are on loan from the Monash Museum of Modern Art.

Ms Smith encourages viewers to be openminded and approach the idea of the fairy as something that is a symbol of many different things.

“Fairy” is also part of the Geelong Pride Film Festival which runs until April 28 at the Pivotonian Cinema, Village Cinemas Geelong and Platform Arts.

The “Fairy” exhibition will be on display at Platform Arts until May 17 with galleries open weekdays from 9am until 5pm.

To mark the end of the exhibition and in celebration of IDAHOBIT day Platform Arts and Splatters Cheese are coming together to host an open mic event.
