THERE are just four days left to apply for a positive ageing grant from the City of Greater Geelong.
Grants of up to $1,000 are available to host events and activities for people aged 55 and over that promote and support healthy ageing, strengthen social connections and encourage physical activity.
Previous grant recipients have hosted dances, workshops, sporting activities and cultural experiences, with not-for-profit and charitable organisations, community groups and learning institutions invited to apply before 5pm on Monday, May 26.
Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the grants program was often the difference between activities “getting off the ground or staying on the shelf”.
“I encourage organisations and community groups to consider applying for a positive ageing grant from council to host an engaging and unique event.
“With older people making up about 30 per cent of the Geelong region’s population, it’s becoming more and more important to help people aged 55+ connect, learn, stay informed and keep active.”
Cr Rowan Story, who is also the chair of the city’s health portfolio, said the council was proud to continue supporting the region’s ageing population through the grant program.
“Organisations and community groups can propose a diverse range of activities and events in their grant applications.
“Examples of events that might spark interest and drive positive social and health outcomes include exercise classes, digital learning lessons, gardening workshops, swing dancing or a concert.”
