Greens want action on Anglesea asbestos

THE Victorian Greens have called for transparency about what will be done about the asbestos that remains at Alcoa’s Anglesea mine. In Parliament last week, it was revealed there is less than 26,000 cubic metres of asbestos landfill on the site. Greens environment spokesperson Ellen Sandell said the asbestos needed to be cleaned up at Alcoa’s expense as part of the site’s rehabilitation. “Alcoa’s exemption from freedom of information laws means the public is being kept in the dark about plans for the Anglesea site.

The government and Alcoa are cooking up rehabilitation plans in secret. This will be public land once rehabilitated and Alcoa can’t be allowed to leave their toxic cocktail for generations to come.” An Alcoa spokesperson said the company’s compliance with its licence conditions ensured the asbestos in the landfill was safe and properly managed
