Kicking goals at Active Geelong

Active Geelong launched its new website on Monday in a bold move aimed at making its namesake Australia’s most active city.

The new website will see local businesses – including Torquay-based marketing agency Fluid – better able to join the “movement movement” via an online sign-up registration.

It will also offer a raft of physical activity resources and tips to inspire workplace employees to achieve their “daily dose” of exercise throughout the day and once they’re off the clock.

Active Geelong chair Doctor Hugh Seward said the organisation hoped to be recognised as one of the country’s leaders in active and healthy communities, with the website a key part of making this objective possible.

“We are really excited to be launching the new website, it will make joining the ‘movement movement’ even easier, as well as giving our ‘Movement Champions’ great new resources to help promote being active.

“We plan to continue building on the website, with lots of exciting new developments planned as the movement continues to grow.”

He said through Active Geelong’s collaborative approach with local workplaces, health professionals and community members, the organisation was working towards transitioning Geelong into Australia’s most active city by 2029.

Ambassadors who have endorsed the mission include Fluid co-founder Mike Beck. The Torquay local and father of three decided to join the Active Geelong board in light of his Type 2 diabetes diagnosis.

He said signing on was an “easy” decision as it was a good cause he believed in wholeheartedly.

“I think there’s a lot of benefits out of exercise, but I think one of the biggest benefits for me has been mental health.”

Mr Beck – who has taken up swimming as a means to exercise – said more organisations should consider being part of the program, as offering employees flexibility in the workplace was important.

Active Geelong will co-host a Geelong Chamber of Commerce “After 5” networking event in conjunction with Clever and Creative Geelong tonight (Thursday, October 17) at the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club (The Dunes, Ocean Grove).

The event will run from 5.30-7.30pm, with people encouraged to register their attendance via ticketing.geelongchamber.com.au.
