Grants to encourage people to go outside and exercise
Torquay Community House’s (TCH) Let’s Go Outside project has received a $20,000 grant during the second round of the Surf Coast Shire council’s COVID Recovery Grants.
From October 5, staff and volunteers from the Surf Coast’s five Community Houses – Torquay, Winchelsea, Anglesea, Lorne, and Deans Marsh – will run free exercise classes in public open spaces across the shire each weekday.
The classes will be COVID-safe and a “fantastic way” for people across the Surf Coast to ease back into exercise, according to Torquay Community House co-ordinator Laura Connor.
“A lot of people are itching to socialise, and get outside and do something but at the same time are a little bit nervous about coming out. This is a great way to encourage people to come and exercise in a safe environment,” Ms Connor said.
“Let’s Go Outside is a good way to help build people’s confidence, the classes will be great for mental, and of course physical health and will be free every day from Monday to Friday across the Surf Coast.
“We will be adhering to all the safety restrictions and are asking people to register for the classes via our website torquaycommunityhouse.org.au to make sure, numbers-wise, we’re following the rules and regulations.”
Let’s Go Outside is accessible to all with no previous experience or level of ability required.
Some of the classes include tai chi, standing yoga, bells and beats, a talking circle, and qi gong.
“This initiative is great for everyone, especially people living alone, they get a chance to come and speak with people every day while getting in a half-hour of exercise,” Ms Connor said.
“We’re a network of five Community Houses in the Surf Coast and while every location might vary a little in classes, the idea is the same – reconnecting in a safe positive way.”
TCH’s classes will run at Hill Top Park, Fischer Street from 10am-10.30am from October 5.
