Local legend releases debut album
Torquay raised, East Geelong resident Bec Goring released her new album Beware this month.
The eight-track release is a collection of hard hitting songs that move between personal observations and commentary on important social issues.
“I see how it is, I see imbalance” Goring ponders on album opener Pay Gap. “How is she supposed to pay her bills, when the gap is stretched as far as this”.
It is a powerful song, full of searching and staggering blues guitar, backed by another guitar, palm muted and consistent.
Title track ‘Beware’ rises, falls with a dissonant build up, that eventually opens up into a rollicking outro, layered with guitar lines.
There are undeniable shades of 90s British guitar bands like Radiohead.
“A few people have mentioned Radiohead,” Goring said.
“I was still caught up in the stories and music of Jeff Buckley and Fiona Apple when my fellow jazz nerds at uni were blasting Radiohead.”
Goring is a graduate from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and the Music Director for the junior program of the Sweethearts – a professional working soul band for school-aged girls, and is the vice captain of the Geelong AFLW team, playing each game in the 2019 season.
“We recorded the album in February in Castlemaine at The Perch Studio, built by the incredible sound engineer Jono Steer. I had admired Jono’s work for years having worked with many so many of my favourite artists (Angie McMahon/Ainslie Willis). Fellow RecLink Community Cup back flanker Felix Riebel (The Cat Empire) connected us and before I knew it we had had an album tracked,” Goring said.
Perhaps the outlier on the album, Wave, a slow building instrumental, is a wonderful show of Goring’s musicianship.
“I feel like the sound to my childhood was from Alby Fazon’s film “Morning of the Earth’”, she said.
“I wanted to compose something that didn’t need words to describe the feeling of a nice wave. I’m really keen to continue the instrumental writing tangent.”
