Make friends with textiles at Amitie

December 15, 2017 BY

Amitie Textiles in Torquay carries a huge range of inspiring fabrics suitable for patchwork, dress making, quilting, home décor and other craft and sewing projects.

Amitie specialises in Japanese and international designer fabrics that appeal to both the sophisticated and the traditional sewer.

Staff are carefully chosen for their sewing skills, and their commitment to providing the best shopping experience for their customers.

Amitie Textiles also offers a range of classes, including bespoke patchwork and craft, curated to fit a wide range of skill levels.

Amitie manager Lucy Kingwell is passionate about bringing people together through the variety of workshops on offer and encourages everyone to give it a go no matter their skill level.

“We offer beginners classes through to the more advanced, where we invite teachers from all around to share their specific knowledge,” Lucy said.

“Our focus is on keeping old traditions alive in a fresh and funky way. It’s also a great way to meet likeminded people and explore untapped creativity within.

“We source teachers from all over the globe, often hosting big names in the patchwork industry for workshops – they can be international or from interstate.

“Our regular classes, such as our ones for beginners, include a list of teachers from the surrounding areas and Melbourne. A number of our teachers also work for us in the store.

“We are always looking for fresh new talent to ensure our class list is always evolving.

“Our class room can fit 20 people quite comfortably, although we rarely host classes that big.

“There is also a cafe serving locally sourced coffee and small batch, handmade cakes and lunches from our resident chef Tana.

“In 2018, Amitie plans to increase its craft stock to include a range of yarn and needlecraft products too.”

Lucy said that beginners looking to try out one of the classes should jump right in, with no question too silly ask.

“Our teachers love sharing these skills and the more people we can convert to handcrafts, the better. These types of crafts are good for the soul; it’s a form of mindfulness, a way to de-stress while letting your creative spirit soar.”

Amitie Textiles is located at 87 Beach Road, Torquay, and open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am until 4pm.
