UK post-punk rockers and 80s hitmakers Modern English will be rolling out the mesh and lace in Lorne this November.

The band will be playing at the Lorne Theatre as part of its first tour on Australian soil as support for the Buzzcocks.

Formed in 1977 in Colchester, Essex, England, Modern English created the worldwide early 80s hit “I Melt with You”, which was prominently featured in the early Nicholas Cage film Valley Girl and was ranked among the top 500 songs ever played on US radio.

Modern English also had success with “Life in the Gladhouse”, which rose to become a UK Top 40 hit.

Lead singer Robbie Grey said the success of the two hits in particular had afforded the band the luxury of finally bringing its post punk innovation Down Under.

“It’s taken us a long time to get to you, so come and enjoy the sound of Modern English.

“It’s funny; I live at the beach here in England. A place called Aldeburgh in Suffolk. We have good restaurants and a nice vibe here.

“We can’t wait to see Lorne as I’m sure it will be better weather most of the time where you are.”

The band’s first Australia/New Zealand tour follows the acclaimed release of its 2024 record 1234.

The album has received international raves in Rolling Stone, Uncut, Spin and Mojo which stated “the cold clang of post-punk guitars and synths sounds very ‘now’, but the veteran band brings a depth and worldliness to these songs that sets them apart”.

“The Lorne concert will have lots of energy and songs covering our whole time as Modern English,” Grey said.

“Including early Mesh & Lace material, our album After the Snow and of course songs from the new album 1234.

“We like to give passion on stage and welcome it in return.”

Modern English will support the Buzzcocks at the Lorne Theatre on November 3.
