Plenty of laughs are ensured when Australian comedy icon Lawrence Mooney arrives in town this August.Mooney will be bringing his latest show tour Dead Set Country to Geelong on August 29.

Dead Set Country is an hour of new material about a city boy gone bush.

Roughed up by locals, mourning dead wombats, talking with horses and having an abiding affair with a tractor, Mooney is “Dead Set Country.”

The acclaimed stand-up comedian has been on the comedy circuit for more than 30 years.

He has toured all over the country with his best mates in the hit show The Comedians and is a regular on TV shows such as The Front Bar, The Back Page, Have You Been Paying Attention? and The Project.

Dead Set Country follows the acclaim of his past three shows: Beauty, Embracing Your Limitations and Pigeonhole.

“The country in Australia is used as a stamp of approval, if something has country in front of it, it usually means its good and trustworthy,” Mooney said.

“We moved to the country, and moved onto land because my daughter wanted to start riding horses. This came with some big learning curves in my middle age.

“Dead Set Country is made up of characters which I will play and describe who I have come to meet in the country.

“There’ll be horses, drinking in the country, and things we don’t have like activewear, which I don’t think is a bad thing. But men do wear bike shorts, and that is a mess.”

Mooney said he couldn’t wait to venture down to Geelong; a place he has developed a liking to over an extended period of time.

“The last time I was down there I was with The Comedians at Costa Hall and Sam Pang and I rode on the wheel down there!

“There’s a beautiful walk along there too, it was right in the peak of summer in early 2024 that we were last there.

“At the end of the Geelong Road you’ve got G-Town and Ripper Roasts too. You’d be a fool to yourself and a danger to others to not go there and have a pork roll with crackling.

“I love Geelong, love getting down there with the hoops.”

Mooney said he hoped thousands would turn out to have a jolly good laugh and forget about all the problems in the world come August.

“This show has been very well reviewed, and people are saying it’s my strongest work in a while, so I’ll back myself there,” he added.

“I’m not too worried about keeping my p’s and q’s in order.

“You can guarantee you’ll get a bit of highbrow, a good dose of low brow and some middle brow.”

The show is recommended for audiences aged 15+, with strong language advised.

Tickets are available on the Geelong Arts Centre website.
