Partnership celebrates leaving no woman behind

March 7, 2018 BY

Susan Halliday will be the keynote speaker at an International Women’s Day event in Geelong tonight.

In recognition of International Women’s Day, observed today (Thursday), a special event to celebrate the achievements of women in the Geelong community will be held at GMHBA Stadium.

The evening event has the theme of ‘Leaving No Woman Behind – Achieving Gender Equality’ and will have a keynote address from Susan Halliday, whose distinguished career spans public and private sector roles and includes a focus on gender and human rights issues.

The event is the result of a partnership between the City of Greater Geelong, GMHBA and the Committee for Geelong together with the City of Greater Geelong’s Women in Community Life Advisory Committee (WiCLAC).

The 2018 Women in Community Life Awards winners will also be announced and presented.

City of Greater Geelong director of community life Linda Quinn has said that the partnership is highly valued by the city.

“Geelong is an increasingly diverse community with many settings and opportunities to achieve gender equality.

“This partnership is highly valued by the City and it highlights the commitment of all parties to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and the community to think, act and be gender inclusive”.

GMHBA general manager of health services Dr Sarah Leach said an equal, inclusive and diverse society is empowering and health enhancing for everyone.

“We fully support the objectives of International Women’s Day in celebrating the achievements of women in the past, present and future, and we are thrilled to offer women in our own region the opportunity to hear from such a renowned speaker as Susan Halliday.”

Committee for Geelong chief executive officer Rebecca Casson said that as Geelong continued to transform into a clever and creative city, it was vital that organisations and businesses across the city-region worked together and strove for gender equality.

“We are delighted to collaborate with the City of Greater Geelong, GMHBA and WiCLAC highlighting that, through partnerships like this one, Geelong can continue to lead on this important initiative.

“International Women’s Day belongs to all communities everywhere – governments, companies, charities, educational institutions, networks, associations, the media and more.

“Whether through a global conference, community gathering, classroom lesson or dinner table conversation – everyone can play a purposeful part in pressing for gender parity.”

Tickets are $15.
