Pupils showcase sustainability success

The inaugural Torquay College Festival is being held on November 12 in conjunction with the Quiksilver Sustainability Challenge.

The festival will showcase activities the students have participated in throughout the year, including art and music, while focusing on their work surrounding more sustainable ways of living.

The Quiksilver Sustainability Challenge is for students from Prep to Grade 6 from Torquay College Primary School, Bellbrae Primary School and St Therese Primary School, and is about creating awareness of the environment, particularly highlighting the problem of plastic pollution.

Student will have their projects for the challenge on display at the festival in sustainability hub with numerous local businesses showcasing their own sustainability efforts.

Festival organiser Robert Skehan from Plastic Bag Free Torquay said the festival was a great opportunity for parents and the community to see the great work students have completed.

“Students are the ones organising and driving this event.

“It’s a way for them to show their parents and community how they’re leading the way in sustainability.

“We will also have live music, arts and craft, many exhibitors keeping with the sustainability theme and delicious food on offer.”

Live music for the festival will include school bands, solo performances from students and talented local musicians.

About 2pm there will be a presentation of the Quiksilver Sustainability Challenge and a raffle.

Festival-goers are encouraged to bring their own water bottles, coffee cups, plates and cutlery to create minimal waste from the event.

The festival is located at Torquay College from 11am-4pm.
