The Rock flies again with new food and wine

February 15, 2018 BY

The famous Bird Rock Café has now been revived as The Rock restaurant and wine bar.

Late last year, the old Bird Rock Café came back to life as The Rock restaurant and wine bar.

The fit-out included a huge booth seating area for functions and larger parties, while the east side of the restaurant stayed true to the original layout with polished timber floors and a view of Jan Juc’s cliff tops and heathland.

Operators Kylie Emmett and Ron Dabu, former owners of the Bistro at Torquay Bowls Club, have tried to retain the relaxed surf atmosphere of the location, focusing on a fresh eclectic menu and splendid local wine and beer choices.

Head chef Ron has a Spanish Filipino heritage and is bringing out the ultimate Latino-Asian fusion menu based on his childhood favorites, as well as inspiration from his world travels.

Ron has an experienced team behind him, with chef Mark Silcock using his vegetarian and vegan influence, and extensive background in Japanese cooking throughout the menu.

Front of house is run by Kylie Emmett and her team, who do a great job of making people feel at home and comfortable in the newly renovated space.

House beers range from Kona Hawaiian Beer, to local beers brewed by Scott Hunt in Torquay, which have been an absolute hit.

Local wines are supplied by Nick at Bannockburn Wines, Terry “Goldy” Goldsworthy and Brown Magpie.

“We have tried involve residents from the surrounding region to help revive this well-known local venue and give it back to the Jan Juc community,” Kylie said.

“We want this place to be a venue where everyone feels welcome and a part of it. Come and try us out for your next coastal dining experience or call us about hosting your next function.”
