Sound Doctor delivers the cure

Music lovers will immerse themselves in the translucent sounds of two fantastic acts during The Sound Doctor’s May 26 gig at Anglesea Memorial Hall.

Local Jan Juc singer Lucy O’Grady from Lucy and the Night Sky will strip back the nine-piece band and perform alongside three back up vocalists under the stage name Lucy and the Diamonds; they will be the opening act for highly acclaimed Indie-folk trio Tinpan Orange.

One of Australia’s most loved brother-sister outfits, Tinpan Orange features the ethereal and mesmerising Emily Lubitz at the helm, joined by brother, guitarist Jesse Lubitz and violin virtuoso Alex Burkoy.

The trio’s heavily stylised dark-folk-country music combines the highest levels of song craft with an aching, sweeping romanticism.

Having shared the stage with Martha Wainright, The Cat Empire, The Waifs and Jen Cloher, as well as playing some of the world’s biggest music festivals nationally and abroad including WOMAD, Laneway Festival and Calgary Folk Festival; Tinpan Orange’s music has grown them a fan-base that stretches across the globe.

Lucy said after contacting The Sound Doctor, her fellow vocalists Fiona Crawford, Anna Cutler and Kylie Nam were “stoked” to be supporting such a high calibre band.

“I contacted The Sound Doctor just saying if they ever needed a support act we’d be really happy to do it and then about six months later they got in touch with me,” she said.

“This time it’s a different formation it’s just me on piano with backing vocals. Usually we’re backed by a full band on drums, bass, rhythm guitar and digeridoo but we’re missing all of that.

“We’re going to be having a girl’s night out stripped back we’re really looking forward to it and the being able to sit in the audience and watch afterwards.”

Lucy said the male members (who’d been performing together for more than two decades before the girls joined about 18 months ago) were happy to let the girls perform as a quartet.

“As Tinpan Orange are a trio and our full band might’ve been a bit much. We’re really looking forward to the gig, it’s one of those rare opportunities for musos where the music is made really special.

“There’s lighting, effects and great sound the team are wonderful to work with. You feel really valued, people sit there, and they actually listen and it’s just a big audience of music-loving people.”
