Surf Coast Community Column

November 20, 2017 BY

Surf Coast Shire has five Community Houses located at Torquay, Anglesea, Lorne, Winchelsea and Deans Marsh, staffed by hard working co-ordinators who strive to provide the community with a friendly, welcoming, fun and stimulating place to experience. Wonderful volunteers help out on Boards and also the day to day running of the houses. The houses have activities and courses that take in all age groups and interests, including crafts, book clubs, cooking, music, painting, tutoring and many others. Please see their websites to see the whole gamut of what they offer.

They have meeting rooms to hire they have resources and links to other support services that communities may need. They are instrumental in starting other wonderful activities such as Men’s Shed, Community Gardens, U3A (University for the Third Age) and is also a place to take a breath and drop in and to have a chat and a cuppa in a relaxing setting. You could borrow books and even jigsaws to take home to keep you occupied.

All Community Houses offer courses which are varied and all are listed on their respective website or call for any information, perhaps a great and different idea for a Christmas present?

We feel the houses are the grass roots of the community and their social conscious is commendable, we appreciate all they do and are always grateful for their dedication, inclusiveness and honesty.

We couldn’t do without the Coordinators or the volunteers and sincerely thank them for their great work.

Warm Regards,
David Bell, Libby Coker, Rose Hodge and Margot Smith, Surf Coast Shire councillors, seen here with Laura from Spring Creek House in Torquay.
