FIVE students from across the Surf Coast will perform at the Top Class Music Showcase as part of the VCAA Season of Excellence annual festival.

Phoenix and Amelie from Lorne P-12 College and Jet, Spencer and Toby from Surf Coast Secondary College were selected to play in the showcase.

Students who have excelled in their examinations or composition tasks across a range of different topics are invited to the event where they are joined by others from across the state.

Surf Coast Secondary College VCE VET Music teacher Judy Mclaren said for the students, being selected represents receiving a top exam result in their study.

“It’s fantastic for the school to showcase the work that’s been done here, and if you include Lorne as well, showing you how strong music education is in this part of the world.

“Our school and Lorne, four times a year we take our students to Barwon Club and we perform at the Barwon Club to give students a sense of working in the industry.

“I think that shows you how healthy it [music] is for students in these areas that we can go and do those sorts of things, and it’s really paid off.”

The three Surf Coast Secondary College students completed either Year 11 or 12 in 2024 and alongside those from Lorne, will perform to an audience made up of teachers and students who may be performing in the future.

Ms Mclaren said students and staff from the school will be making the trip to Melbourne to watch the showcase and is looking forward to seeing her past students recognised.

“Having been on the journey with these kids, seeing them really be rewarded for all the work they’ve put in and to be performing alongside the other students who’ve achieved the top results in their exams.”

Top Class Music and Sound performances will be held on March 19 and 20 at the Melbourne Recital Centre.
