SURF MUSIC: An Interview with The Chats

CH: Eddy Current Suppression Ring at yours for a feed, bevs and a chin wag. What goes out on the table?

TC: We’ve never met those guys so I’m not sure what they like to eat or drink. But I can assure you we would put the finest
meal they’ve ever eaten in front of them. A roast chook from Coles, some coleslaw, bread rolls, maybe some lettuce too. A few cartons of VB as well. We treat our guests well.

CH: Funniest story from touring with Queens of the Stone Age?

TC: The whole tour was so funny and so surreal, it was mad. One part that really stuck out to me was the night the Queens took us out to dinner. The place we were at wouldn’t let you take your beer outside if you wanted to have a smoke, so I wasstopped at the door. Josh Homme appears out of nowhere all of a sudden and he goes “This guy is allowed to smoke and drink wherever he wants” and the restaurant staff just go “all right”. It was mental.

CH: What does Surf Music mean to you?

TC: Surf music is cool, like the Ventures and

Dick Dale, that stuff rules.

CH: Fav surf break/board?

TC: Out the front of the local, Yaroomba beach.

CH: What instruments/amps are you lads running on stage?

TC: Pricey plays a Fender Jag (his backup’s an Eastwood Airline Bighorn) and usually plays through a Fender Twin Reverb, but he likes to use a Fender Hot Rod sometimes too. Eamon plays a Fender Mustang bass and usually runs through an Ampeg SVT-CL combo. Matt usually plays a C&C drum kit with light sticks.
