The Bungalow joins campaign to suck fewer straws

July 11, 2018 BY

The Bungalow staff say “no deal” to single-use plastic straws.

The Bungalow has joined the Last Straw campaign’s fight against plastic straws by encouraging customers to drink their favourite cocktail, soft-drink or milkshake without a plastic straw.

Owner Kerry Bell encourages staff and patrons to embrace the new way of drinking their beverage without a straw or with noodle spaghetti.

“Over 500,000,000 plastic straws are used and thrown away every day. That’s a lot of waste clogging our oceans and piling up in landfill and with plastic taking an average 450 years to start to degrade, The Bungalow wanted to help,” Kerry said.

According to the Last Straw campaign, it’s estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean by weight than fish. The good news is that there is a really easy way to help change these statistics.

The Bungalow is joining venues around the country by becoming plastic straw-free by making one simple change – adopting a policy of giving straws out on request only. This move can reduce straw use in a venue by up to 50 per cent immediately.

Kerry’s passion for the environment is evident.

“I read recently that the first ‘artificial straw’ was patented in 1888, the same year that National Geographic was founded. National Geographic launched the Planet or Plastic campaign this year, highlighting the urgent need for consumers to stop using plastic.

“We are not only encouraging our patrons to stop using plastic straws at The Bungalow but to rethink using them in their day to day lives and encourage others to do the same.”

Skip the straw. In most cases, you don’t need a straw. Tell your server, “no straw, please” when you order a drink.
