Your sinuses are four pairs of air-filled cavities located in the cheeks, forehead and around the eyes.

Are you suffering with sinusitis?

Common symptoms can include headache, facial pain, pressure and tenderness, swelling of the face, yellow or green coloured mucus from the nose, fever, tooth pain, sore throat, nasal congestion and even fatigue.

Sinusitis means infection or inflammation of the sinuses.

Your sinuses are four pairs of air-filled cavities located in the cheeks, forehead and around the eyes.

The sinuses actually lighten the skull, allow for voice resonance and humidify the air we breathe.

Their main function is to produce a mucus to moisturise the lining of the nose.

This mucus layer protects the nose from pollutants, micro-organisms, dust and dirt.

Sinusitis may be caused by allergies, common colds, environmental pollens irritating the nasal passages, such as with hay fever or bacterial or viral infection.

Did you know that Osteopaths can help treat sinusitis or sinus congestion, headaches, facial pain and many more jaw and facial related complaints?

The Osteopathic approach to treating sinuses is very holistic.

Osteopaths look at the face and any sinus congestion as draining into the supraclavicular fossa (the area above the clavicles or collarbones).

They can do very gentle sinus percussion (also referred to as tapping) and submandibular or massage along the jaw line combined with lymphatic drainage techniques to drain the face and head.

“I love treating sinusitis as you can achieve almost immediate transformation of the pressure around the bridge of the nose,” Sequence Osteopathy’s founder Dr Rebecca Burns says.

“Treating the front of the neck and behind the jaw can further drain the sinuses thus giving the patient a feeling of lightness and relief.”

Dr Burns says that dry needling with very fine facial acupuncture needles into and around the nasolabial folds can be very effective at targeting the maxillary sinuses and creates an immediate relief from the pressure felt in the face and behind the eyes.

Sinusitis prevention strategies can include washing your hands regularly, eating a well-balanced diet, regular movement and exercise and maintaining good sinus hygiene by drinking plenty of fluids.

If you are suffering sinusitis, avoid dairy and milk products and anything cold, heavy or sweet.

Consume freshly cooked, light, crisp and bitter foods and stay hydrated with warm liquids like herbal tea (possibly with lemon and ginger) and try inhaling steam with some eucalyptus oil to break up the mucus.
