Theatre of the Damned unveils Carrie the Musical

The curtain is set to come up on Theatre of the Damned’s latest production, Carrie the Musical, tonight (Friday, August 23).

Based on Stephen King’s 1974 novel and the 1976 horror movie, the performance follows the story of Carrie who gets bullied from the start.

Across six performances, audience members can expect to see an array of special effects akin to the film, which starred Sissy Spacek.

“There’s lots of special effects we have to put into it because she has to make the cross float and chairs tip over and all that sort of thing because that’s when she discovers her telekinesis powers,” Theatre of the Damned co-founder Tony Dahl said.

 

 

He also said the production was a brilliant piece of theatre with an incredible score.

Featuring 21 cast members, rehearsals started in May to bring the production to life.

“We sent them out all the material and they sat down for the first rehearsal and started singing, we sat there and went ‘God, we could probably put this on tomorrow’,” Dahl said.

Carrie the Musical follows the success of the theatre company’s last performance, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in May this year.

Dahl said Theatre of the Damned was all about putting on the shows nobody had ever seen in Geelong.

“We do it for the love of the theatre.”

 

 

“They’ve (phe cast] all been waiting to do it, so it’s been a show everybody has wanted to see.

“We just love watching them perform and giving them a space to do so and they’re all great; they’re all amazing people.”

Carrie the Musical will be the theatre company’s third show in the Belmont High School Performing Arts Centre, which holds 290 people.

Each performance will have an interval where the bar will be set up in front of the foyer.

Tickets are available for $38.50, with the final performance taking place on August 31.
