TRUANTS are school parents of rock
Saint Therese Catholic Primary School’s very own parents and friends band, The Truants, is looking to perform at more venues with their cruisy rock’n’roll style.
First performing in August 2016 at the school’s parent night, the group have continued to jam together with members Noel Dillon (St Therese PS principal) on drums, Briony Smith on vocals, Matt Henderson on lead guitar, Nic McGay on rhythm guitar and vocals and Sean Boswell on bass.
“It began at a parents and friends meeting at the school,” Briony said.
“The group thought it would be a great idea to put an invite in the weekly newsletter requesting parents who could play an instrument or sing, to join together for a fun night of jamming.
“We only had three people turn up to the first night. The principal, Noel Dillon mentioned after the first night he could play the drums, so he joined us too.
“We sent out another notice requesting a bass player and school parent Sean Boswell joined in.”
Truant is a name for a school dropout, fitting for the vibe and members in the group according to Briony.
“We play cover songs, but I would call us more of a rock band than anything else,” Briony said.
“We perform at all the school events and Cowrie Market, it’s great fun.
“The band is a bit of an outlet, a night for myself and I go back home feeling energised and happy. Some people have sport or art, I have music. It’s an endorphin rush and we gel so well together which makes it easy to play.
“Age definitely doesn’t matter. Often people have kids and lose themselves, becoming more serious about things. This band has helped me find myself again and become a more fun version of who I am.”
Rehearsing every Tuesday night, The Truants are looking to play in more venues and share their sound on stages across the region. For more information on the group head to their Facebook page (The Truants), or phone Briony on 0419 778 978.
