$10,000 raised in Surf Coast MND freeze
A SEA of more than 400 blue beanies turned out at Cosy Corner in Torquay at the weekend to embrace the cold and raise more than $10,000 for motor neuron disease (MND) research.
Sunday’s cold water swim marked the second annual Torquay Big Plunge event, with locals flying into ocean temperatures below 14-degree to support the cause.
The majority of funds raised on the day were through beanie and sock sales, while a portable sauna donation from Hello Saunas also contributed to the $10,000 total.
After raising $2,500 last year to support a local family who were dealing with the effects of MND, event co-organiser Jay Muir said it was overwhelming to quadruple that figure in the fight against MND in 2023.
“The event was just brilliant and to raise over $10,000 was a fantastic effort from all involved.
“It was hilarious to hear all the cold squeals of the crowd when a set of swells came through.
“This year we had many community groups including the local football clubs and the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club who provided IRB and lifesaving services for the event.
“The word seemed to get out there a bit more this year which was fantastic.
“It’s uplifting to see how strong the community spirit is on the Surf Coast and we will definitely be back again in 2024!”
The $10,000 raised at the Torquay Big Plunge event helped to support the Big Freeze event at the MCG on Monday, which raised over $2 million for the Fight MND cause.
